This paper examines the ambiguous social status of the jethani — the wife of a man’s elder brother — within traditional North Indian patrilocal, patrilineal joint families. While seniority by marriage grants her authority over younger sisters-in-law ( devrani ), she remains subordinate to her mother-in-law and husband’s elder female kin. Using ethnographic examples and feminist critiques of kinship, we argue that the jethani occupies a liminal position: both enforcer and victim of patriarchal hierarchy. The paper concludes that her status is characterized by delegated authority without ultimate power, making her a pivotal yet precarious agent in family politics.
