Matt continues his journey as the human heart of the show, eventually taking a harder stance against the supernatural residents of Mystic Falls. The New Antagonists: The Heretics
For the first time, Stefan was unequivocally positioned as the primary male lead. Without the Damon-Elena-Stefan love triangle, Wesley’s performance deepened into a study of guilt and reluctant heroism. Season 7 forced Stefan into a pseudo-paternal role with the vengeful vampire hunter Rayna Cruz, as well as a heartbreaking romantic arc with Caroline Forbes. Wesley masterfully portrayed Stefan’s internal civil war: his desperate desire for a normal life versus the “ripper” lurking beneath. The flash-forward sequences—showing a bearded, feral, and seemingly soulless Stefan—allowed Wesley to explore a darker, more broken version of the character than ever before.
The main antagonists of season 7 are Cade (Joseph Morgan), a powerful and mysterious hunter, and Katherine (Nina Dobrev), who returns from the Other Side. Cade, a centuries-old hunter, is introduced as a new character who is determined to kill all supernatural creatures. He forms an alliance with Katherine, who has her own agenda and wants to use Cade to get what she wants. vampire diaries cast season 7
The season features a seasoned ensemble that had to navigate a world without its central protagonist.
The season 7 finale, titled "I'll Be Watching You," wraps up the storylines of the season. Cade and Katherine's plans are foiled, and the characters finally find a way to save Elena. However, the process of saving Elena comes with a cost, and the season ends on a bittersweet note. Matt continues his journey as the human heart
Stefan takes on a protective role for Mystic Falls while finally exploring a "much-anticipated" romantic relationship with Caroline Forbes.
Roerig continued to play Matt as the “eternal human,” but Season 7 gave him a darker edge. After the death of his sister (Vicki, in Season 1) and the departure of his mother, Matt became a cynical, gun-toting vigilante. The introduction of the anti-magic “Armory” allowed Roerig to explore Matt’s resentment toward vampires without the usual moralizing. His romance with Penny (a human cop) was tragically cut short, reinforcing the season’s theme: being human in Mystic Falls means suffering. Season 7 forced Stefan into a pseudo-paternal role
Wersching brought a chilling, aristocratic cruelty to the role of Damon and Stefan’s “mother.” Lily was not a maternal figure but a cult leader, leading her “heretics” (vampire-witch hybrids) with a sociopathic lack of empathy. Wersching’s performance was a masterclass in polite villainy—she never yelled, but every whisper was a threat. Her eventual redemption and death were rushed, but her presence destabilized the Salvatore brothers’ identity.
Season 7 of The Vampire Diaries (2015-2016) stands as the most radical tectonic shift in the series’ history. For the first time, the show had to operate without its central protagonist, Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), who was placed into a magical coma at the end of Season 6. This wasn't a temporary absence; Dobrev had left the series entirely. Consequently, Season 7 is defined not by who is present, but by who is missing—and how the remaining ensemble desperately tried to fill a vampire-shaped hole in the narrative.
With Elena gone, the supporting players were promoted to leads. This season belongs to them.
