In April 2016, right before her graduation, Emily survived a violent, unprovoked assault while power walking on the Constitution Trail in Normal, Illinois. Opting not to hide away, she chose to speak publicly through student and local media to spread awareness about public safety, reclaim her narrative, and empower other survivors.

Emily attended Illinois State University (ISU) , graduating in the spring of 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in Social Work. Driven by a desire to serve vulnerable populations, she pursued further advanced clinical education at DePaul University within their Advanced Standing Master of Social Work (MSW) program. emily houska
