The primary goal of the student exploration is to move beyond simple alignment theories and investigate why eclipses are relatively rare events. Key objectives from the Teacher Guide include:

Eclipses are spectacular astronomical events that occur when one celestial body passes into the shadow of another. In the case of a solar eclipse, the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, blocking the Sun's light and casting a shadow on our planet. In a lunar eclipse, the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, blocking the sunlight that normally reflects off the Moon's surface. The 3D Eclipse Gizmo is an interactive simulation that allows students to explore and understand the dynamics of eclipses in a virtual environment.
