And in 2022, Love Today featured a brief, poignant scene of a gay couple at a wedding—not as caricatures, but as normal guests. The indie film Cobalt Blue (2022, on Netflix) finally gave Tamil audiences a tender, heartbreaking tale of a brother and sister falling for the same mysterious man. Most controversially, Sillunu Oru Kadhal (2006) and Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (2010) defined a new hero: the obsessive, selfish lover. Gautham Vasudev Menon’s VTV (2010), starring Silambarasan and Trisha, presented a hero who is an aspiring filmmaker stalking a Christian girl, Jessie.
