(often referred to as a "barring call" or "call barred") is a telecommunications service that allows a user—or the network provider—to block specific types of incoming or outgoing calls on a phone.

Many smartphones have call barring settings hidden in the menu. You may have accidentally turned it on, or you may have set it up previously and forgotten to turn it off. This is common with "Airplane Mode" or "Do Not Disturb," though those function slightly differently than true call barring.

If you have not paid your phone bill, the carrier may place a restriction on your account. Usually, they will allow calls but bar outgoing calls until the balance is paid.

Most carriers use standard codes to control this feature. You can type these into your dialer and press call.

This prevents the phone from receiving calls.
