It offered something Bollywood rarely dared to show at the time: anti-heroes. The protagonists, Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillippe), were wealthy, manipulative, and sexually awakened. They were not looking for a soulmate to sing songs in the Alps with; they were playing a dangerous game of chess with human emotions.
Perhaps it is time for a proper Hindi reboot. With a new generation of actors willing to play grey characters (think Ayushmann Khurrana in Andhadhun or Ranveer Singh in Padmaavat ), Bollywood is finally ready to do justice to the source material.
