Adam is a horrifically scarred man, his face a map of calcified burns. He speaks in riddles and absolutes. He tells Jonas the truth: He is Jonas Kahnwald, from a future far beyond 2053. He is the founder of (Thus the world was created). Adam explains that time is a corrupted wound, a “glitch” in God’s plan. To heal it, the knot must be untied from its very beginning. This is arguably the boldest season premiere of the series. Where most shows would spend an episode reorienting the audience, Dark doubles down on complexity, introducing a new time period (1921) and a terrifying antagonist (Adam) who is also the protagonist’s own self.

In 1953, Helge is a timid child dominated by his mother, Greta. In 2019, the elderly Helge is found by Jonas (The Stranger) in the bunker. Helge utters the chilling phrase: "The beginning is the end, and the end is the beginning." He attempts to leave the bunker to stop "him" (presumably Noah or Adam). The narrative shifts to a pristine, black-and-white 1953. A young, wealthy couple, and Doris Tiedemann , are having breakfast with their daughter Claudia . Egon is a police officer investigating the disappearance of two boys. Meanwhile, a younger Bernd Doppler is lobbying to have Winden’s nuclear power plant built. He argues it will bring progress to the town. However, the caves are located on the proposed construction site, causing friction. Bernd’s wife, Greta , is introduced, as is their son Helge , who is currently a small, shy boy.

While Jonas is in the past, we cut to (six days after the Season 1 finale). The apocalypse has not happened yet — but the town is a ghost of itself.
