The challenges are compounded for mature women of color, LGBTQ+ women, and women with disabilities. A 2023 USC Annenberg study found that among female characters over 50, only 16% were Black, 7% Latina, and 3% Asian — despite these groups making up a third of the U.S. female population over 50.
