Sadly, in the 19th century, the dome collapsed. It was never rebuilt. This gives the church a slightly truncated silhouette today, a reminder of the fragility of even the grandest human creations. While it is a loss for architecture lovers, the open roof structure inside adds a strange, raw character to the nave that you don't often find in fully restored cathedrals.
