For years, a third installment tentatively titled Journey 3: From the Earth to the Moon was in development. Director Brad Peyton and star Dwayne Johnson were expected to return. However, by 2018, Johnson confirmed via social media that the project was essentially cancelled due to difficulties in cracking the script and scheduling conflicts. This news effectively halted the momentum of the "Journey" brand, leaving the franchise in a state of cinematic limbo.

The story focuses on a high-stakes race against time. The characters must descend back into the Earth, not to explore, but to relieve the pressure before a global explosion occurs.
