Kael ran, his satchel banging against his hip. Inside were the notes he’d been compiling—not on the composition of the tiles, but on their rhythm. The hum wasn't static. It changed pitch when it hit certain structures. The skyscrapers, the bridges, the monuments—they were acting as tuning forks.

Kael worked in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, though "science" felt like a generous term now. There was no studying Hexnautio; there was only surviving it. He stood on the roof of the high-rise, his breath pluming in the unnaturally still air. The wind had died the day the sky locked.
