According to Vedic mythology, Goddess Sati immolated herself in the sacrificial fire of her father, Daksha, after he insulted her husband, Lord Shiva. Distraught, Shiva carried Sati’s body and performed the dance of destruction. To save the universe and calm Shiva, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra to dismember Sati's body into pieces.
