Tray Icon Instant

The concept of the tray icon was popularized (though not strictly invented) by Windows 95. Microsoft introduced the "Notification Area" on the taskbar. Its original intent was strictly for system notifications (hence the name), such as a printer job completing or a battery running low.

An application might become unresponsive when trying to reopen it from the tray, often requiring a process kill in Task Manager. tray icon
