Ulead Photo Express [2021]

In 2006, the Taiwanese company Corel (distinct from the original Corel Corporation of Canada, which had acquired Ulead's assets) acquired Ulead Systems. Corel, already managing a bloated portfolio of graphics software including Paint Shop Pro, struggled to find a place for Photo Express.

Ulead positioned Photo Express as a “digital darkroom” in a box. It was sold as a standalone product, bundled with scanners/cameras (e.g., HP ScanJet, Epson Perfection), and as part of Ulead’s “InstantHome” suite. Once the image was open, the "Edit" tab offered the famous "Express Fix" features. This was the precursor to today's "Auto-Enhance" buttons found in Instagram or Lightroom. With a single click labeled "Enhance," the software would analyze the histogram and adjust brightness, contrast, and saturation.
