Parasitic protists of the phylum are ubiquitous components of aquatic ecosystems, often exerting subtle yet profound influences on host physiology and population dynamics (Khalil & El‑Bassiony, 2020). Recent surveys of freshwater fish in the Yangtze River basin uncovered an undescribed apicomplexan parasite that caused conspicuous gill lesions and elevated mortality in cultured Cyprinus carpio (Liu et al., 2022). Preliminary morphological observations suggested affiliation with the family Sporocystidae , but molecular data were lacking. lia lin parasited

The present study aims to (i) formally describe the Lia lin parasite complex, (ii) elucidate its heteroxenous life cycle, (iii) quantify its pathogenic effects on principal fish hosts, and (iv) assess its broader ecological implications. By integrating field sampling, controlled infection experiments, histopathology, and phylogenomic analyses, we provide a multidisciplinary perspective on a parasite that is rapidly emerging as a threat to freshwater biodiversity and aquaculture.
