Meanwhile, back at the RV, the younger siblings, Bobby and Brenda, have rigged the vehicle with explosives. When Papa Jupiter returns to finish the job, they blow up the RV and the family dog, Beast, mauls the villain. The surviving members—Doug, Brenda, Bobby, and the baby—stand amidst the burning wreckage, bloodied and traumatized, but alive.
The casting is crucial here. Unlike the original, where the family felt a bit more like hippie drifters, this family is distinctly middle-class and slightly dysfunctional. Aaron Stanford as Doug is particularly noteworthy. He is introduced as a somewhat weak, slightly annoying liberal Democrat who drives a hybrid and clashes with his Republican father-in-law.
