This is the number one reason laptop photos look terrible. We spend hours touching our screens and keyboards, and the webcam lens collects every speck of dust and fingerprint grease. A dirty lens creates a "haze" or a "glow" around light sources, making the photo look milky and low-contrast.

Once the app opens, ensure the mode is set to Photo (indicated by a camera icon) rather than Video. Frame your shot in the center of the screen.
